The Mid-Term Progress Workshop of “Main Extreme Climate Events and Monitoring, Verification and Prediction of Key Meteorological Disaster in China” was held from 9-10 May 2010 in Beijing. Nearly 70 delegates from universities and institutions attended the meeting. Dr. Xiao Ziniu, Director-general of NCC, chaired workshop. Mr. Zhang Qiang, Deputy Director-General of Forecast and Network Department made an address.
As a national eleventh-five-year key project, the project is organized by CMA, and cooperated by MOE, CAS, MWR and MLR.During the workshop, six subjects reported their progress respectively. After deep discussion, it concluded that, 1) thoughts were unified to take the national demand as research emphasis, especially on concentration analysis of occurrence mechanism of key weather/climate events, such as severe drought in Southwest China, large scale cold event, and low temperature in Northeast China; to carry out projection research on inter-decadal variation trend of rain belt over East Asia in future 10-20 years to provide scientific basis for decision-making of governmental departments; 2) tackling team of operational system development was set up centralized by the technologists of the subjects, to quicken the operational system construction; 3) it is clarified that the construction of extreme climate events index system should combine with extreme events mechanism analysis, the transformation of research achievement to operation should be push forward to realize the organic combination among the subjects.
