On 17 August 2007, Prof. Piero Lionello from University of Lecce visited the LCS and Division of Climate System Modeling and delivered report on “MedCLIVAR:A CLIVAR Programme for the Mediterranean Climate”. Experts and graduate students from NCC and CAMS etc. attended the seminar. Prof. Li Zhaoxin, specially invited research fellow of NCC, chaired the seminar.
Prof. Lionello has been engaged in research on Mediterranean climate change for many years. During his report, he mainly introduced:
1) reconstruction of past climate series and exploration on rule and characteristic of historical climate change in Mediterranean by collecting available observed data, proxy data and historical literature data;
2) response to climate change in this area, relationship between regional climate change and climate mode in tropics and mid-high latitudes, and their roles in extreme climate events in Mediterranean;
3) under various scenarios, the results of projection on climate change in Mediterranean by using global and regional climate modeling assembly indicated that, during 2071~2100, the stabilization of circulation in this area will enhance, and climate will be obviously warmer and dryer.
Prof. Lionello’s report is of great novelty. His research fruit is good reference for studies on climate change in China and East Asia. The seminar was followed by enthusiastic discussions.
